Close call in 1983

Postby SAC Killer on Tue Nov 12, 2013 9:04 pm

Interesting article which describes Soviet reaction to a NATO exercise in November 1983. You know it was serious if it scared the Iron Lady!

We did about everything which met the KGB model for escalation on our part even though they also grossly misinterpreted some of the intelligence. I was in a chemical and nuclear weapons army brigade that was a major player in the exercises as we tested the communications, command and contol sytems. The ’89 Wintex/Cimex exercise was cut short by Chancellor Helmut Kohl when he heard there was a simulated use of nuclear weapons on West German soil. Just about anything we did had a negative political impact such as NAIRA (Nuclear Accident/Incident Response and Assistance) training and exercises, Graves Registration field training and especially when we moved the chemical weapons out of Germany. For years they didn't know the actual location of the ammunition depot they were at and were really upset when they found they had been protesting for years at the wrong place.

I think the fact that the protesters didn't know where assets really are is a good thing.

It was what we were really after. It was actually very amusing to watch all their antics knowing they were misdirected. The German people were very upset when they found they had been moved and accused us of being deceitful. What they didn't know is that it was done at the request of the German government in 1961.
