The patch for the 509th labeled MM1B, II is wrong, wrong, wrong! It's a winged, red bomb over a white circle on a blue background. I wore one from '75 into '76 or early '77, and it was in use when I left in September of '80. I have no idea when it changed.

I see the change must have been when SAC went away.

I will see if I can photo mine and attach a pic.

I'm amusing myself by imagining what the crowd reaction would have been if there had suddenly been a need to launch A-06.

"Execute EWO launch evacuation procedure!" That would have been quite a sight! :)

Would also have been interesting if the crowd walking around tripped the IZ and the crew dispatched the SAT.

The 509th patch I got in '75 and wore until going to DOV. And my 100 alert patch.

I wonder when the wings started counting number of alerts. Also did one wing start it and the others follow or was it at the same time.

Back in the 70s at Malfunction Junction, some MCCMs kept track on their own. I recall an attempt to get a "100 alerts" patch created, but it went nowhere. Maybe the fact that it showed an underground capsule with vertical shaft, and said "100 Missions Under Montana" helped turn the air-breathers at 15th AF & HQ SAC off. :?

I always kept track of my own. We didn't have those patches at D-M up to '75. I did a staff trips there in the '80s, and there were Command and Master Buffers patches (Command had a floor buffer w/ star and wreath on the handle, and "3000 Hours Behind The Buffer"). I had 220 there; 107 more at WAFB, but I didn't keep track of how many were 36s and how many 24s.

Speaking of D-M, does anyone recall Capt. Nick Bonacci?

I proudly display my "100 Missions Under North Dakota" patch and that was from the early 80's at Minot. Some of our crew dogs also had a "200 Mission" rocker that they added (poor saps). Usually once you got in one of the shops it was very difficult to get the 200 mission rocker.
