I/We Shall Be Relieved

Postby TerrorOfTucson on Sun Sep 22, 2013 10:32 pm

I heard "I shall Be Released" on the radio a couple hours back, and had the thought that it could be a missile song about a very long alert tour. I'll be making a try at it. If anyone would like a shot at it, go to it. Updates....eventually.

Back in 1965, an author named Donald Barthelme wrote a crazy short story about a Minuteman MCC that had been left on alert for 133 days. Despite all the claims to the contrary on the web, the story is in the public domain (I've researched it; the New Yorker had the copyright and they did not renew it). Amazingly, when I was on crew one of the guys in my squadron was named Shotwell (the MCCC in the story). I never told him about that. You can read the story here. Or if the firewall won't let you reach that link, just google "game" and "shotwell" and you will get many hits.

Don't know that I've read it, but it seems familiar...

"Game" is the title. It was originally published in the New Yorker. It's an easy and crazy read.

I read it. As I said, it seemed vaguely familiar. Any idea when it was published in the New Yorker? Seems unlikely I'd have read it there.

It was the 31 July 1965 edition. I didn't read it there either. I read a xerox of it later.

So far:
They say that ev'ry crew can be replaced,
And they said we should not fear.
So I remember ev'ry face
Of ev'ry man who put us here.
We hear the crews are coming,
From the west and from the east.
Any day now, any day now,
We shall be relieved.

They say ev'ry crew needs protection;
They say ev'ry crew must fail.
Yet I swear I see our reflection
In the stainless steel on the wall.
We hear the crews aren't coming,
From the west or from the east.
Some fine day now, any good day now,
We may be relieved.

I was in high school then. But I'm an AF brat, and it was floating around the base, so my dad brought a copy home, and I got to read it. At the time I had no clue I'd become an MCCM.

And not getting any younger. At least these days we can talk about stuff the youngsters on active duty cannot, and hopefully give them some good advice.

I may be 66 but I know as much about computers as most of the new guys, plus I had 33 years experience as an engineer. Bet I could still beat most of them.

The last episode of the current season of Hell On Wheels ended with someone singing I Shall Be Released. Thinking, is it old enough to be current to the late 1860s?, I looked it up, and no, Bobby Zimmerman wrote it about 100 years later. Felt right for the ending scene, though. Gonna have to work on more verses.

Simply amazing. Occasionally I will hear on the radio one of the tunes the Groober's commandeered and I will sing along with it...the "correct" words of course...my daughters think I'm crazy.
Game was a great story...I hadn't read it before now. thank you for sharing that.
