Silo Names?

Postby Nou on Fri Jun 06, 2008 5:06 am

On Google Earth the silos have names to them, like "Mushroom Farm" or "To Russia With Love" and other cheeky titles (some very creepy ones in there too!).

I know most of the Malmstrom silos have names of famous people from Montana or the name of the area they are located in, but where did these other names come from?

I haven't looked at any of the old PK silos, but I assume they might have the same names that they were given when they were MM?

The names were given to all our Launch Facilities and Launch Control Centers by a group of peace protesters called 'Plowshares'. You can search the web and find the full list of names. I pulled many of my alerts at 'Nervous Energy'.

It was the protesters?

Heh, I think they gave me the wrong impression if anything... thought someone in SAC had a major sense of humor!

Eitherway, cool names I guess.

Gee, I never particularly saw a sense of humor within SAC.

I was thinking more the crews... like the first ones through on the silos got to name them... sort of like bombers getting names from their crew... :?

After pulling over 700 Alerts in both Titan II and Minuteman (the Deuce system at Grand Forks, ND) I never heard of any names given. They were just called by their numbers; 2-2 (Titan) or Alpha Zero (Deuce).

Many of the Minuteman capsules had mascots though. There is another thread here with many great photos of the mascot paintings on the walls of the capsules. One capsule at Grand Forks, I can't remember wich one any more, had Garfield painted above the blast door and other places and a letter of approval from Jim Davis, the Garfield cartoonist, allowing the Garfiled likeness to be placed throughout the LCF.

I don't recall any high zoot names being given to us by the peaceniks either, and by god I want one. Tango-1 just sounds so boring when it could be referred to as Armageddon's Fulcrum or something equally snappy. You folks currently stationed at T-01 at Warren - work on that for me, will ya? Let me know how it turns out....

Thanks, that gave me the key to find the Warren site names (http://asuwlink.uwyo.edu/~jimkirk/warren-mm.html), but for some reason the 400th didn't get cool names. So I guess I'm back to the Armageddon's Fulcrum naming campaign...anyone want to sign the petition?

At the very bottom of the page there are links to all 6 minuteman missile wings and all the names for the LF's and MAF's. You can also find all the names and their locations in the "Nuclear Heartland" book published by Nukewatch, the nuclear protestor group.

No way, they filled in Tango!?!?!?! Why didn't they consult me on that? Man, I leave the AF alone and what do they do - they abolish SAC, they fill in Tango, they give the pocket rocket away, and they give the SAC shield away...what next!??!?

I thought they left all of the PK LFs and LCCs intact in case they were needed again?

Any idea what happened to the original equipment? Sold to DRMO to be shredded and sold as scrap?

That makes me feel better then. When you said "the only thing at T-01 (FEW) right now is dust" I had visions of the next Super Wal-Mart parking lot minus the Wal-Mart...a vast expanse of flat...

I remember C-0 at Grand Forks had Garfield all over the place with snappy little quips.
