GLCM Unit Order of Battle

Postby TDRSS on Mon Oct 05, 2009 7:31 pm

ALCON,

So I'm trying to update Wikipedia (yea.../boo...), and I don't have much on the structure of the GLCM force. I do have a list of Tactical Missile Squadrons (also on wiki), but no parent organizations (wing or group). I'm working on changing that with info from AFHRA. Here's what I have (from Wiki), which ain't much...

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
38th Tactical Missile Wing - Wueschheim AB, West Germany (complete?)
-89 TMS
-405 TMS
-822 TMS
-823 TMS
303d Tactical Missile Wing - RAF Molesworth, United Kingdom
-87 TMS
?
485th Tactical Missile Wing - Florennes AB, Belgium
?
486th Tactical Missile Wing - Woensdrecht AB, Netherlands
?
487th Tactical Missile Wing - Comiso AB, Italy
-302 TMS
?
501st Tactical Missile Wing - RAF Greenham Common, United Kingdom
?
868th Tactical Missile Training Group - Davis-Monthan AFB, Arizona
-868 TMTS
?

Can folks help fill in the squadrons for each GLCM Group/Wing?

Cheers,
TDRSS

According to the information I have, there was only 1 Tactical Missile Squadron (TMS) and 1 Tactical Missile Maintenance Squadron (TMMS) per base. I also have a list of how many "hot" missiles each base had. Each TEL could carry 4 missiles, so by dividing, you can figure out how many TELs were there; not including spare ones. Each TMS had multiple missile flights. One GLCM flight included 2 Launch Control Vehicles (LCC) and 4 Transporter Erector Launchers (TEL), totalling 16 missiles per flight. I also have the dates the units were active at each base. I got the info from the AAFM Newsletter, Volume 12, Number 4, dated December 2004, article "GLCM Part I" by Col (Ret) Charlie Simpson.

38th TMW, Wuescheim AB, FRG: 89th TMS, 38th TMMS - 1 Apr 85 to 22 Aug 90 (80 missiles)

303rd TMW, RAF Molesworth, UK: 87th TMS, 303rd TMMS - 12 Dec 86 to 31 Jan 89 (64 missiles)

485th TMW, Florennes AB, BE: 71st TMS, 485th TMMS - 1 Aug 84 to 30 Apr 89 (48 missiles)

486th TMW, Woendrecht AB, NL: no squadrons activated due to unit never reaching IOC - 27 Aug 87 to 20 Sep 88 (64 missiles supposed to be assigned)

487th TMW, Comiso AB, IT: 302nd TMS, 487th TMMS - 30 June 83 to 27 May 91 (112 missiles)

501st TMW, RAF Greenham Common, UK: 11th TMS, 501st TMMS - 1 Jul 82 to 31 May 91 (96 missiles)

Hope this helps.

Cory,

Thanks a million.

I noticed some of the wings had missiles prior to GLCM (38th TMW comes to mind), so they had the extra squadrons.

I'll be updating Wik when I get the L&Hs from AFHRA.

So, I gotta ask - are you typing this stuff up on alert (LCC Netlink, or whatever other name they came up with the system)? That would have been nice to have for my 300+ days underground.

Thanks again!

No problem.

Nah, just at home. I hardly use the LCC Netlink when I'm on alert unless I'm at the ACP or SCP and need to use it for certain duties. If I'm at a PLCC, I don't use it because I don't need it, and its way too slow. It's more of a hassle I think to try and use it. When not busy, I spend alert the "old fashioned" way... reading and watching tv if anything good is on.

We had the first two installs of LCC Netlink in the 741st MS (minot); the biggest worry at first was which crews went out to the sites with it - avid porn watchers.

The 38TMW had several "lives". I believe you are including the Mace and Matador ops squadrons (50s/60s era) as GLCM OPs squadrons.

I personally could not have tolerated more than one OPs squadron at a time during ADVON and site buildup.

I think you're right - thanks for clarifying. WHen I write up the L&Hs for the squadrons, I include their "previous lives" as fighter/bomber/missile squadrons, up to the current designation (or last designation). The TMS' for the 38th were kinda freaky, because I thought they just did GLCM, and they had L&H dates in the 1960s. But your message cleared that up!

Thanks,
TDRSS
