This series of photographs are of Atlas 34D (58-2205) the first operational ICBM delivered to Francis E Warren AFB , Wyoming by an overland convoy on 28-Sep-59 from the General Dynamics Astronautics plant in San Diego.

The first image was on the factory floor prior to the shipment and is not dated. The location of the Wyoming / Colorado border image was the old US Hwy 85 & 87 ten miles due South of FE Warren’s main gate.

Atlas 34D was mated to the 564th Strategic Missile Squadrons Launch and Service Building A-3 from 1960 until the Squadron was deactivated in the Spring of 1964

On 26-May-64 we loaded 34D on to a C-133B Cargomaster and I was sent TDY to escort and provide tank watch for the flight to Vandenberg AFB, California.

The final image is the launch on 5-Oct-65 from 576 B-3 LSB in Operation Seething City a suborbital flight ejecting an orbiting vehicle OV1-2 for a radiation study.

Here is something that just came to mind,

A senior Air Force officer in missiles today with 20 years service would have started in 1994 after the Cold War was over and would have been born in 1972 at the end of the Viet Nam War.

When Atlas, the first ICBM came on alert in 1959, that same officer with 20 years would have joined in 1939 before World War II and would have been born in 1917 during World War I.

Captain Bill,

Good point. Major Simonson who was the MCCC for the JFK launch in 1962. Enlisted as a aviation cadet in 1942 flew thirty missions in B-24s over Europe during WWII. During the inauguration of Harry Truman he flew a B-29 over Washington DC and he was born in February of 1921.

It is amazing how we have aged. I was only 12 years old when Atlas when on alert. We have a group of Minot Minuteman I launch officers. I am turning 67 tomorrow but I am one of the kids in the group since the last Minuteman I group for Minot went through Vandenberg in 1969. I was probably the next to last group in August 1969

My first SQ/CC had been in Atlas, at Mountain Home if I recall correctly (always a risk these days). He was a good commander who worked for some, well, less impressive bosses, and I hope he is still alive and doing well.
