A few years ago we were in Vail, Colorado at a Farmers Market. The vendors were selling wine, cheese, and a lot of other junk. In one of a tent was an old man with a card table full of books and no customers. I walked and said “ John Glenn went up on 109D what was the tail number of your missile?” He replied” You must have been in the Air Force because no one has ever asked me such a stupid question” It was Lieutenant Commander Scott Carpenter and he went up on Atlas 107D.

We talked about Colorado where he grew up in Boulder on 7th Avenue and Aurora and his capsule was named “ Aurora 7’. His launch was on 24-May-62 and I was on my first launch 13 days before with the launch of 127D.

Scott gave me a free copy of his book “For Spacious Skies” but charged me $20.00 for his autograph. We talked about 20 minutes and when I left there was a line of about twenty new customers.

It was a great experience and he had a great sense of humor. He was also a Navy diver and had a second book a fiction “At The Abyss”

I have attached a photo below of his missile 107D at the General Dynamics factory in San Diego.

I am old enough to remember the Mercury 7 being announced. Going to hear Gene Kranz tomorrow night, sure he will be mentioned.
