The 706th Strategic Missile Wing was activated at FE Warren AFB, WY on 13-Feb-58 for the Atlas missile. On 1-Jul-61 the 706th was re-designated the 389th Strategic Missile Wing and was deactivated on 25-Mar-65. The image below are the new patches we had made from our original wing emblems.

Thanks for sharing that! Unit lineage is always interesting. 321SMW started out as the 321st Bomb Group (Medium), flying B-25s out of North Africa. I had the distinct honor and privilege of meeting the first 321st group commander when he came to El Forko to give a speech at a dining out.

The 351st and 390th SMWs were both B-17 Bomb Groups in WWII. Got to ride on one when the Collings Foundation

came to our airport a few years back. As SAC Killer said--history of the unit.

My wife was the PA for the 351st. There was a photo of Clark Gable at a window-gunners position, and no info on it's history. I found out maybe 10 years ago on the History Channel's show The Color Of War that he made a film with the 351st, and subsequently found a 6-DVD set on the air war that contained that movie.

The 389th Bombardment Group was activated on 24-Dec-42 and consisted of four squadrons the 564th, 565th, 566th, and 567th. Assigned to the 8th Air Force one of the 389th BG missions was the B-24s low-level attack against the Ploesti oil fields on 1-Aug-43.

The 389th Strategic consisted of three missile squadrons the 564th, 565th, and 566th. On 1-Jul-62 the 389th SMW and the three missile squadrons were transferred from the 15th Air Force and re-united with its parent the Eighth Air Force.
