i was a dmccc with the 533rd from 73-77 (or was it late 76?) the scarves were blue for the line crews, burgundy for the instructor crews and gold/yellow for standboard. there were no red scarves. as an mccc, i was on both sides (533, 532). geez, i can't remember having a different color for the 532nd, but it would make sense, wouldn't it? anyway, no red for the 533rd (i'm sure of that one!)

I was in the 533rd at the very end of the program. We wore blue scarfs, the 532nd wore red. All squadron ACP crews used grey scarves. Instructors wore white and DOV gold/yellow. We had HQ pins to wear on the scarf. And if the entire crew got HQ they could wear the normal colored scarf, but with a bunch of white stars on it.

In the early 1970s it took 6 months after certification to get the missile badge and 3 years to get the star. Yes that meant you pulled alerts for 6 months without having a pocket rocket.

Hmm, I wonder when they changed it. I too was early 70s and I think I got the rocket when I certified. But the star was 3 years and the toilet seat was at 7 years. I guess later I could have worn the "new" ops version but I just couldn't bring myself to do that because I never wore it in the LCC.

When they created the space badge I qualified for that also. But I remember waiting a couple of months to start wearing it, because that gave me the time I needed to add the star.

I can't tell you when they changed it but I certified in Oct 1969 and still have the orders dated 6 months later awarding me the Missile Badge. I got out before the space badges came about.

IIRC, my experience was that of SAC Killer on the badge. I never got the Ops badge because I spent my SAC career with the other one. The Ops model struck me as gaudy. I think it came out around '86, before I retired. Again, IIRC.
