As a 533rd Crew Member from 1970-1975 we wore blue scarves. Shoes could be combat boots, especially in winter/snow, but usually we just wore the regular low quarter unifrom shoes

Thanks, Crewdog! That is the future plan, to end up wearing the Ops badge (in addition to hanging a nice EE degree on the wall). If the Air Force doesn't work out for me, I could always apply in the civilian contractor side. Of course, relocating to the Tucson area wouldn't be a bad backup plan either. You could use some help down there, right Chuck ?

Ok, now I am going to ask the most overkill question of all. What is the standard "take-along" inventory for a crew member?

This is what I imagine the typical DMCCC would have with him/bring with him on site :

Crew Bag Items:
-(Crew bag like the one pictured, black leather)
-Dymo Label Maker
-Dash One
-Grease Pencils (mechanical or standard)
-Ear plugs (in a clear plastic case with a screw cap)
-Hardhat
-"Aviator" sunglasses
-Personal Notebook/Logbook

Uniform items:
-Crew blues
-Flight cap/squadron cap (with metal rank insignia)
-Bib scarf
-MA-1 or L2B Jacket (w/SAC patch, leather name badge, plastic-encased insignia)

And for the typical maintenance team member:

Tool Bag Items:
-(OD Green "Tanker" tool bag)
-MSHA-approved yellow and black explosive atmosphere flashlight
-Applicable tools
-Applicable TOs/CEMs
-Ear plugs (same as the ones listed for the DMCCC)
-Grease Pencil(s)
-Goggles/Safety glasses

Uniform Items:
-OD Fatigues
-Hardhat
-OD Utility cap
-OD M65 Field Jacket (for McConnell/Little Rock)

So, do I get the award for "over-analyzing the standard SAC missile crew member" award ?

In the A-bag and TO bag I take on alert, they contain:

-24 TO
-Shorts, T-shirt, socks, slippers
-My own pillow, and Snuggie
-toiletry bag
-personal log book
-pack of gatorade
-snacks
-books, magazines, DVD's, and other entertainment items
-and the obligatory cold weather gear as required :x

Vis-a-vis markers, pens, ear plugs, hardhats, and other gear and TO's you would need on alert are already provided in the capsule.

Reminds me of a pre-departure briefing at Minot in November when there were 6 MM I wings and 3 Titan wings

as I remember it

When I was there ('71 - '74) it was

Stan-Eval = Gold
Instructor = Red
Line Crew = Blue (both 373rd and 374th)

Shoes were combat boots or steel toed three quarters, which I hated because they chafed my ankles.

We had flight jackets, but they had to be turned back in (don't remember any leather name tags on anybody's)

Something I wonder about is when the squadron patches got moved to the shoulder?

I don't who decided on scarf colors but at Minot in the early 70s we had the following

Stan/Eval - Orange
Instructor- Yellow
740th- Red
741st- Green
742nd- Gray

If you had a long neck like I do, the scarfs got frayed pretty quickly from your beard.

I think I wore my boots when it was cold. Also had pair of white "bunny boots" but never wore them. I still have them but they don't get much use in Houston.

Nick you forgot the most important item.YOUR FOOD. At Davis Monthan after they shut down the Foil Pack kitchen each crew member had to bring there own food. Would have made for long alert if you dont bring
food.

There is a company in Texas that still makes the old style Nav/Crew bags. The name of the company is Scott Leather Company. I found them on Google They make the bags in either black or brown. They have two different sizes. They run about two hundred eighty dollars. I still have my old one that was issued to me It is getting kind of dryed out thinking about getting a new one just to remind me of old times.

Thanks for the link! Don't get rid of the old one if you get a new one! Were the USGI ones rounded or square on the top? I'd love to see pictures of what a USGI one looked like. There is a picture around here somewhere that shows part of one, but not it great detail.
