We had elevator races at D.M. We also used to simulate the TCCP that had you open the deluge valve on level 7 and then race back to the control center prior to key turn. Tried it both ways using the elevator and using the ladders. The ladders were always faster. One other thing one of my MFTs and I did was climbed from level 8 to level 2 with out using the ladder. The things you do when your are young and dumb.

My question was (perhaps not well or clearly expressed)--were LR ladders all straight up, or were some offset around the hard water tank?

As I remember it All escape ladders were attached to the equiptment side of the exhaust duct. From level 8 to 7 the ladder was on the left side, from 7 to 2 it was on the right side. with all the floor covers open you could look down to level 7. A vertical ladder.

I am surprised you could climb up through holes in the floors. Our crew ran test at 570-7 on the missile and the equiptment and signed off that it worked properly before AF accepted the site. The BMAT and I also was assigned to right up any openings in the floor or wide spaces between floor and wall anyone could fall into. I would guess we had 50 items on our list.
