Wing Command Post

At the 390th our Command Post was not a hard structure. It was just a three story building with the Command Post on the bottom floor. I never understood why they built it with out any kind of protection. Were the Command Posts at the other wings semi hard structures or were they the same kind of structures as the 390th ?

TO -2-24 (Intersite Comms TO) gives the layout for each of the three wings' command post, and all of them are in soft buildings somewhere on base. I know from what Timm Severud told me and from what I've seen, the 390th Admin building also housed the WCP. I guess the logic was that a soft WCP worked for day-to-day logistics, but if it ever hit the fan, the bases would be targets and that's why the ACPs were there.

My recollection is the wing HQ was a 2-story building at D-M, and I can't remember exactly where the WCP was. At Whiteman, I recall it was in a 1-story wood-framed building of likely WWII vintage.

While I was in the390th Dec 78-Jun 82 the entire building was the 390ths. First floor half was Command Post other half was Wing Commander/ DO /and DCM offices.Second floor was DOT and DOV. Third floor were other offices I think Plans and Scheduling there were also C.E offices and Public Affairs . The 570th and 571st barracks were just to the north past the finance building. When I first got there the 570th and 571st orderley rooms were in a old chow hall. They moved them to the building just to the east of Command Post some time in 1980.

OK, I misrecalled on the 2-story building. But from '70-'75 the 570th and 571st were in the building, and I think maybe on the 2nd floor. At some point, there was a missile painted on that walkway to the building. I just looked thru Advance To Memory and Reset-Shutdown and found no pix of that walkway. Did find TSgt. Severud, though.

Executive Support Crew S-007, 16 HQs. Gone two years as of five days ago. Still miss him. The man really did have the joker's sense of humor.

Last time I was in Tucson a friend of mine was kind enough to get me onto DMAFB. You would have laughed at how excited I got when we reached the Wing HQ/WCP building. IRCS antenna was still there, but the 487L antenna was gone. It really only took about 10 seconds for me to realize I was in the right place. Couldn't got inside, but we were able to get inside the MPT/Pre-D building. I about lost it when I saw the 390th emblem still shinning on the EWO vault door. The Pre-D room was almost the same, and it was weird to walk out through those double doors, like hundreds of crews had done years before. I tried like crazy to find what would have been the MPT room, with no success. They modified the side of the building opposite the Pre-D room, so maybe that's where it was.

I have pictures, will see if I can get the EWO vault door one up.

Think I mentioned before about a LtCol Schreck (or Schroek, not sure of how it was spelled; we referred to him as Col Shriek) who was the chief of EWO for a while. Went in one morning, forgot to notify the SPs he was opening up the vault. Company arrived quickly. His mode of speech was a series of questions. No point in answering--you'd always be at least 3 questions behind.

I'd love to see a pic of that door.

Current layout of the building. The custom service area is the Pre-D theatre. Any idea where the MPT would have been?

Nick the MPT was located where the equipment storage and rental area is.

I remember Col. Schreck when I was at DM. He used to smoke those big cigars and drove a 63 Chevy Impala. He gave me my opsec out breifing when I separated.
