PK Spacelift?

Postby LA CrewDawg on Thu Nov 15, 2007 4:39 am

Are they using the PK birds for Spacelift? Will they be renamed in that role?

Kind'a sad :( Both of the missiles I pulled alert with are gone, LGM30F and LG118A.

Feel for ya' dude. I think one of the (many) reasons I was "engouraged" to retire is that many of my earlier bases had closed or had their missions significantly changed. :?

FUBAR: Homestead AFB, Clark AB.

Hospital 'disappeared': Kirtland AFB.

Base Closure: Richards-Gebaur AFB.

'Treatied' Away: Comiso AS, Wueschheim AS.

Force Change: Grand Forks AFB.

I haven't heard anything about the PK being used as spacelift. I thought the missiles were being dismantled and cut up like they did with the GLCM's when they were dismantled. But, they may have changed their minds.

The Minuteman II however is being used by the MDA for their missile tests, and also by AFSPC for the Minotaur Spacelift vehicle.

Orbital Sciences -- who seem to have a knack for recycling ICBM's into launch vehicles -- are using some surplus PK stages for their Mintaur III, IV, and V. The original Minotaur was a 1st and 2nd stage off a Minuteman with some extra stages on top.

Here's details:

I believe that their Taurus launch vehicle is supposed to be based at least partially of the stages developed for Midgetman.
