All I can say is "wow". The military has seen lean times before; the 1930's are a good example. We also had a military that was small and inefective. It is doubtful that, if Roosevelt had not seen the eventual involvement of the US in the War in Europe and started a build-up of forces and weapons, we would have been in an even worse position than we were on December 7, 1941. Of course, we still had the draft, and because of that, weren't required to keep such a large "standing Army", as we are today. What bothers me the most is Congress nickle and diming to death our soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines. When you go into the military, you have a pretty good chance of being sent to some Gawd Awful places. Your benefits of Housing, Healthcare and the Commissary network, make your posting a bit more tolerable; or at least they did when I was in. As a Second Lieutenant, I didn't have much at all in the way of furniture or creature comforts when I arrived at Minot, but I had a house and it was warm, and I had good heathcare even if I had to wait in line sometimes. I remember the push for Tri-Care and the eventual erosion of active duty health care benefits. I didn't like it then and I don't like it now. Ask almost any American if they want a "Strong military" and they will say "Yes!" They don't however want to pay the taxes to keep it strong, nor are they willing to make the real life sacrifices required to maintain readiness.
All I could think as I read this article was "The Lord giveth Alert Pay, and the Lord taketh it away..."

Good article, by the way.

Sadly, I'm afraid you're right. On the bright side, you do get a nifty medal now...
